Meet Marianne Birkner- Incoming Data Scientist at Facebook.
What is the best piece of professional advice you’ve ever been given, and how has it contributed to your career?
Someone once told me that the most important thing you will always have with you is your network. I never really understood the value of it until I started meeting so many amazing people. Many people in my network have helped me get amazing opportunities through my college career, which I wouldn't have been able to do so without getting out there and meeting new people. I know that no matter where I am or what I am doing, this network will always be there to support and guide me.
In what ways do you support your personal development?
I always try to get myself out of my comfort zone and to meet new people that come from different backgrounds and experiences in order to learn more about the different life paths people have taken. I believe that there is so much we can learn from peers so getting out there and meeting new people will always be one of the best ways to develop your understanding of the world.
What are your top strategies for networking?
One of the most important things I would recommend is to keep up with the relationship. It doesn't matter if you become distant or not, keeping up with people is important because you never know when they will appear in your life again. I would also recommend to have a spreadsheet with the names of every person you meet, how you met them, and their contact information. This will help you keep up with everyone you meet as well as to have a go to place when trying to find someone's contact information.
