Meet Lucelia Nelles: Strategic Design and Management student of Parsons School of Design, and aspiring entrepreneur in the women's wellness and fashion industries.

What did you major in at college?

I am majoring in Strategic Design and Management at Parsons School of Design in NYC. This program is a unique combination of business strategy and creative design. I chose this major because I believe that as every industry becomes part of a more competitive landscape, it is crucial for employees on the business team to have a full understanding of the design process and how the minds of designers work. If there is a divide in understanding within a team, the potential of a company will never be maximized. Merging design with business tactics allows me to be more innovative in creating strategies for monetizing conceptual products and effectively collaborating with designers.

In what ways do you support your personal development?

I am currently supporting my personal development by traveling. I quit my job in NYC, terminated my lease, and advocated for additional scholarships in order to take a semester to fully immerse myself in my studies and in a new culture. I am living in Paris for the next five months, and am traveling Europe on the weekends whenever I have the chance. Giving myself the time to recharge after working and being in school full time is allowing me to step back and view my life from a different perspective in order to discover new things about myself. The time away from a familiar place has sparked new creativity, and is helping me clarify my vision before returning to New York.

What do you want to be remembered for?

As a designer and a young woman, I have continuously sculpted my projects around developing products that provide a health benefit to the user, without disrupting the aesthetic appeal or performance of the product’s original function. I want to provide consumers with a purchase that will seamlessly transition into their everyday life, while still providing a concealed health benefit. I have found that this distinctive outlook on design and health is an appealing approach to the millennial market, and I strongly believe it could be a driving force in making change. More specifically, I have designed a product that combines fashion and technology that will protect women in the event of sexual assault. I hope to be remembered as someone who gave an actionable solution to the #metoo and #timesup movement by further developing and launching this product. I would like to be remembered for creating a shift in the epidemic of sexual assault in the United States, and contribute to creating an environment that is safe and respectful.
