Spotlight on Liam Hyde
Meet Liam Hyde: An incoming junior at Indiana University, Liam is experiencing the multidimensional sides of business development in his internship with Next Gen.
What do you consider to be the most important factor in starting a business?
I think that, as cheesy as it is, the most important factor is true dedication and determination. Anyone can start a business and have a good idea. But do you have what it takes to fail and get back up to keep going? Failure and setbacks are inevitable when starting a business. But the most important factor is if you are going to take the punches or crumble under the pressure.
What are some business ideas you’ve had?
My business in high school was a real estate open house sign business. My parents are both in real estate so I get to listen to them talk about it all the time (two thumbs down btw). So I knew that they hated putting out signs for their open houses because they paid me to do it all the time. I realized that if they were willing to pay me, I was sure a bunch of agents would as well. So I went to companies around my area, handed out flyers, and talked to whoever I could about my business. Eventually, it became too popular so I had to hire some employees to work for me. This was a great learning experience, even though it didn’t really equate to anything except a few extra bucks in my pocket.
What are some ways you keep motivated?
I think that it’s always important to have a reason that you are doing something. This is a great way to stay motivated. If you truly can’t find a reason to do something, then most likely it’s not worth doing at all. For example, working out is a good topic. Most of the time I hate going to gym, but I know that I need to do it because I want to be healthy and be able to play with my kids when I’m older. Additionally, no one wants to study for their accounting test, but the things that I’m learning are going to carry with me for the rest of my career. I think having a reason to do something is very important to stay motivated.
