Spotlight on Judith Martinez

Meet Judith Martinez - Founder of InHerShoes and Social Impact enthusiast mobilizing people to break things - one glass ceiling at a time.

What was the hardest part of building your startup?

Personally, I'd say maintaining and building up the mental muscle and wherewithal to keep going despite the thoughts, "evidence", and opinions to stop, or better yet, don't even start. There is a reason why 90% of startups fail; and there is also a reason why in 2018 alone 1.07 billion people (specifically, Americans) chose to freelance (compared to a 998 million just 3 years ago). Many of these freelancers are choosing to begin their businesses, brands, and organizations for the first time ever. Whether you consider yourself an entrepreneur or not, anyone who is willing to create something from nothing requires a mental endurance that I believe surpasses and outperforms any business model, formal education, or "shot of inspiration" being sought after outside of ourselves. It's something I constantly strive to foster and refine as I keep failing, keep winning, and most importantly, keep growing.

How do you prioritize self-care?

Self-care has been a huge learning experience for me which has been surprising. I always thought self care meant sleeping well, eating well, exercising -- you know, the basics. What we all know. But it wasn’t until my health began to deteriorate where I was forced to really discover and learn for myself what self-care actually meant for me.

Now, self care isn’t just diet, exercise, and sleep. It’s SO MUCH MORE. It’s who I choose to spend my time and energy with, letting go of relationships (both personal and professional) that no longer align with who I am and what I’m up to, what comes across my social media feed, and down to the level of cleanliness of my personal space (like my car, office, and apartment!).

I prioritize self care by actually calendaring blocked off times where I check-in with myself and create a structure where I check in with friends/fellow entrepreneurs to do the same. Whether it’s setting alarms throughout the day to breath, blocking off time where I am tech-free, or working out, I am always building up and exploring what promotes my self care mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

If you were to get a tattoo, what would it be and why?

I think it would have to be “in omnia paratus.” It’s Latin for “ready for all things.” I studied latin in university and always have loved the power of language and words!
