Spotlight on Emma Butler
Meet Emma Butler -The Founder of Intimately, a lingerie company for women with disabilities, Emma is creating a startup that will empower a market of at least 35 million American women.
What inspired you to get into your line of work?
Well before Target, Tommy Hilfiger or Zappos launched their initial lines of "adaptive" apparel in the fall of 2017, the seedlings for Intimately were born. To be precise, my interest in apparel for women with disabilities started when a close family member was diagnosed with an auto immune disorder that caused her a lot of pain. The pain did not kill the spirit of my loved one, but instead how the world (and especially the fashion world) treated her did. She needed to shop for new bras and underwear made of specific material and that functioned a certain way but doing so brought her to ugly medical websites that sold what she calls "granny panties." I watched how this shopping experience affected her confidence and when I got to Brown and met others with her condition or other disabilities, I learned that at least 35 million American women go through this same dehumanizing shopping process.
How do you prioritize self-care?
My self care journey has been long and exhausting; I think this question is so important and especially in the segment of the fashion industry I am working in. Self care and empowering yourself go hand in hand. I suffer from anxiety and depression and choosing to go to therapy on a weekly basis and go to a doctor and get medicated greatly helped me. I also have learned that I am happiest when I have a good book to read, amazing girlfriends to call, I can paint and use my creative side on a weekly basis, and of course spend some time with my incredibly cute english bulldog, Harry.
What does your morning routine look like?
I get up at 7:30am and check all my social sites like any millennial. I then go for a run or work out for 20 minutes at the nearby gym (if I'm feeling productive). Then after a quick shower and breakfast, I call my sister or mother and then go off to the studio to paint! I try to get work done and meet up with some of my favorite people and laugh, all before noon. This busy morning usually sets me up for a long afternoon nap!
