Tell us about your college career.
I transferred from the University of Colorado Boulder my junior year to Brown University! At Brown, I am concentrating in Gender Studies with a self-proclaimed focus in how women develop their sense of self agency in business and leadership positions. I am also the President of Women’s Entrepreneurship and a Peer Entrepreneur in Residence - which means I get to help students on campus with their ventures, connecting them with resources and sharing my own expertise. I’m most excited for the Women’s Incubator I planned for this semester, which aims to demystify the venture capital world for female-led ventures.
Have you had your own entrepreneurial ventures?
Yes! At age 18, I began a nonprofit called Lit Without Limits, donating inspiring literature to girls around the world in mentoring groups. I wrote a curriculum to go along with the books. This led to the writing of my own book, She Is Without Limits, which led to the creation of my LLC, also called She Is Without Limits! SIWL provides online resources for women through the power of storytelling. I found with LWL that there is immense power for collaboration and support, even with women from different cultures and backgrounds who live thousands of miles apart. SIWL was my mission to further prove this and make more connections.
What’s the best piece of advice you like to give?
It all comes from a source within you. You have to nurture yourself and coax the best out of you - by listening to your intuition, not spending time on people or things that drain you, and putting self-care first. I was workaholic for so long, and I’ve found that now that I prioritize good books and funny Netflix shows and an evening glass of wine, I’m so much more productive and ultimately happier.
What most excites you about being Next Gen’s Director of Community?
Believe it or not, I really enjoy emails and spreadsheets! Ha! But most of all, I’m my happiest when I’m connecting with others and giving them what they need. I’m a big believer in the power of community to uplift the individual. The greater majority of my life has been spent in mentorship groups or in nonprofit work, and I think this is where I’ve derived the most joy from community and connection. Entrepreneurship is hard - I’ve been there. I’ve had the highest highs and the most frustrating lows. Being able to lean on a community of entrepreneurs who are going through just the same experience and have their own unique advice is huge for anyone - whether they’re just starting out or 10 years in.
Why do you like entrepreneurship so much?
I always say that entrepreneurship is simply creativity with a structure! I was always creative growing up - drawing, writing, singing, you name it. I get that same buzz when I’m helping another entrepreneur innovate or brainstorming on my own ventures.
What’s a fun fact about you?
I have a goldendoodle puppy named Fitz Carlton!
How can we get in touch with you?
Shoot me an email! I'd love to chat. I'm Haley (at) NGSummit.com.
